What the surviving evidence establishes
Dave Haley spoke to Pyro on 3 February 2006, shortly before Psycroptic released Symbols of Failure. The recovered interview describes an ongoing exchange of ideas between the drummer and his brother Joe: a guitar phrase or drum pattern could start a song, while some pieces developed over much longer periods.
Haley said the material was followed by concentrated rehearsals, with drums recorded in a local studio and the remaining parts at Joe’s home studio. He also discussed writing lyrics as separate stories with science-fiction elements. His account connects the album’s dense music with the practical work of arrangement, rehearsal and recording. [1]
